Summer Tips for Clear Aligners in Dallas: Keep Your Smile on Track While You Soak Up the Sun

Summer brings freedom, travel, and plenty of time outdoors. But when you’re wearing clear aligners—like 3M Clarity Aligners from Solventum—it’s important to know how to keep your treatment on track, even when your routine changes.

At Ohlenforst Carney Orthodontics, we want your orthodontic journey to be smooth, even during summer adventures. Whether you're traveling to the coast or lounging by the pool, these expert tips from Dr. Carney will help you make the most of your summer with clear aligners.

Clear Aligner Do’s for Summer

1. Wear Aligners for 20–22 Hours a Day

  • Stick to your schedule—even when you're out of routine.

  • Set phone reminders to change trays or put them back in after meals.

2. Pack Your Travel Essentials Include these in your suitcase or carry-on:

  • Aligner case (never wrap them in napkins!)

  • Travel toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Extra aligner set (if you’re gone more than a week)

  • Aligner cleaning crystals or mild soap

3. Brush and Rinse Before Re-Inserting

  • Eating at a cookout or food truck? Brush and rinse before putting aligners back in.

  • At the very least, rinse your mouth and aligners with water.

4. Keep Aligners Out of the Heat

  • Don’t leave them in a hot car or direct sun—heat can warp the plastic.

  • Store in a cool, shaded place when not in use.

5. Stay Hydrated with Water

  • Water is safe to drink with aligners in, and it helps keep them clear.

  • Avoid sugary or acidic drinks unless aligners are out and you've brushed afterward.

Clear Aligner Don’ts

1. Avoid Eating Anything or Drinking Sugary or Dark, Potentially Staining Liquids with Aligners In

  • Food and drinks can stain or damage trays.

  • Always remove them and brush before putting them back in.

2. Don’t Skip a Tray or Delay Changing Aligners

  • Stick to your schedule—even if you're on vacation.

  • Delays can extend treatment time or reduce effectiveness.

3. Don’t Forget to Clean Your Trays

  • Rinse and gently brush them at least twice a day with a gentle toothpaste. Some toothpastes, especially natural one’s can be overly abrasive which can potentially make your aligners cloudy.

  • Avoid colored mouthwashes. Some can stain your trays…especially with frequent use.

4. Don’t Toss Them in a Napkin

  • This is one of the most common ways aligners are lost.

  • Always store them in their case.

Aligner-Friendly Summer Snacks and Treats

Clear aligners make it easy to enjoy your favorite foods—just remember to remove them first! Here are some aligner-approved summer treats:

Frozen Treats:

  • Smoothies

  • Ice cream (soft serve, without hard mix-ins)

  • Sorbet or frozen yogurt

Fruits & Snacks:

  • Watermelon, peaches, or soft berries

  • Hummus with soft pita

  • Cheese slices or cubes

Hydration & Drinks:

  • Infused water with lemon, mint, or cucumber

  • Coconut water or chilled fruit-infused water (after removing aligners)

As always, be sure to brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners to avoid trapping sugar or acids against your teeth.
